About School

BACKGROUND

Situated at "Woodstock", Spooners Hill, St.Michael, a few metres away from the former all boys' Grace Hill Primary School, this school was built due to overcrowding at the previous location.

The land on which this school is built was acquired by the then Government of Barbados from Dr. Carlyle Clarke. This school was the second to be built as a part of the World Bank Project and named after the late Lawrence T. Gay, a prominent educator.

The Lawrence T. Gay Memorial School was constructed in 1981 and became occupied by students in January 1982 under the leadership of Mrs. Cora Waldron. The official opening and unveiling of the plaque was held on May, 12th 1982 by the then Minister of Education, Hon Dame Billie Miller.

The school is co-educational and was built to accommodate eight hundred and forty (840) pupils. On its opening, four hundred and eighty-eight (488) students were registered, thirty-seven (37) were unregistered and nineteen (19) teachers were placed. This role however increased in 1982 with the amalgamation of pupils from Roebuck Boys' and Buxton Boys' School.

The school’s historical physical layout initially comprised of one building however, it currently comprises 4 blocks:

A- The Administration Building also known as The Cora Waldron Block

B- The Grace Hill Block (which houses the Class Ones)

C-The Matilda Deane Block (which houses the Receptions and Infants)

D- The Carlyle Clarke Block (which houses the Class Twos to Class Fours)

Former Principals of this school include: Mr. Chester Blades, Mr. Lionel Eastmond, Ms. Jacqueline Holder, Mrs. Jennifer Lavine-Hinds, Ms. Beverley Parris, Ms. Jacinta Alexander and Mr. Patrick Clarke.

The present principal is Mr. Brent Blackett. To date the school has a roll of approximately three hundred and seventy (370) students, thirty-three (33) teachers and ten(10) ancillary workers.
